Getting Down in New Mexico

We spent our last week in New Mexico traveling over 80 stories underground into the depths of Carlsbad Caverns. The caves are a cool 56° year-round, so it was a welcome relief from the hot desert sun!

The Big Room, detailed in our pictures below, is an enormous 8.2 acres–the largest cave room in the United States. Despite its size, the cave was surprisingly well-lit and accessible. There is a path winding throughout the Big Room and plenty of stops at interesting formations.

Only a little over 3 miles of cave are open to the public. More than 120 miles and numerous other caves have been discovered in Carlsbad National Park to date, and explorers are finding new passages and caves all the time. One of the more interesting caves, Lechuguilla Cave, has been dubbed “the most beautiful in the world” thanks to its unique crystal formations. Unfortunately, in order to preserve the fragile formations, the cave is open only to scientific expeditions. There was an amazing segment on BBC’s Planet Earth, however. We highly recommend you watch it, it’s fascinating!
